The Artefact Tombaroli 1996 is a singular discovery. This vintage English sparkling wine is exceptionally rare and was made from Pinot Noir grapes grown on the wild, windy landscape of Exmoor. Aged for over 27 years on its lees, this sparkling wine has developed remarkable depth, texture and layers of complexity, revealing itself slowly in the glass.
The hand-painted label depicts the story of the ushanka-wearing scientist, who moved to the mystical moors to become a winemaker, in the style of Black Hours - intricate medieval prayer books written in the 15th century.
Tasting wine is an individual experience; no two notes could ever truly align. At our first tasting of the Artefact Tombaroli 1996, we captured that the wine is deep gold, savoury and wonderfully evolved, with saffron, ginger and a distinct biscuit note leading into honey, toast and gentle smoke. There’s a real umami edge too - soy, Marmite and dark chocolate, with rich notes of baked fruit, fig, prune and raisin. Complex, curious and full of life.
We love it alongside Porlock Bay Oysters with Heather Honey & Saffron.
